During the past few years, the Practice has grown and continues to do
so. We now have circa 12,400 patients and an increasing
number of clinics to deal with the demands of the NHS today.
Our Business Partner and Patient Services Manager head a team of trained
receptionists, secretaries, clerical and computer operators. All of them
are here to assist you; each will endeavour to help with any non-medical
aspects of your care.
Each member of the practice team is bound by the same rules of
confidentiality as the doctors.
DISTRICT NURSES
The district nursing team consists of qualified registered nurses and a
specialist trained care assistant. They provide skilled nursing care,
following an assessment of the individual’s and carers/family members’
needs, to housebound people in their own homes or in residential care.
The district nurses provide specialist community care, which includes
the management of wounds, continence, chronic disease, various acute
illnesses and cancer. Subsequently, they also undertake many nursing
procedures such as dressings, administration of injections, ear care,
bowel care and investigative tests. This care is provided in close
partnership with the individual, their family/carers, the GPs and allied
health professionals and agencies.
The majority of the district nurses’ work takes place in the patient’s
own home/residential home.
The District Nurses can be contacted on 023 8087 4364 - Monday to
Friday, between 8.30 a.m. and 4.30 p.m.
HEALTH VISITORS
Health Visitors are qualified nurses with additional training in child
and family health. They advise on a variety of health related issues,
but they work mainly with parents, carers and children under the age of
5 advising on all aspects of a child's well-being and development.
Nursery Nurses work with the Health Visitor. Nursery Nurses have a child
care qualification and the Health Visitor may refer a family to the
Nursery Nurse for management of various problems, for example –
behaviour, sleep or toilet training.
The health visiting service hold a Child Health Clinic at Totton Health
Centre on Tuesdays and Thursdays between 9.30 a.m. and 11.30 a.m.
The Health Visitor or Nursery Nurse can be contacted on 023 8074 3223.
LOCUM DOCTORS
The practice employs locum doctors, some of whom work at the Health
Centre on a regular basis. All locums will have been through a
recognised vetting process to check their suitability to practise.
MIDWIFE - ANTENATAL CARE
If you think you may be pregnant, arrange to do a pregnancy test via a
kit purchased from the pharmacy. If your test is positive, make an
appointment to see your doctor who will then refer you to one of the
community midwives. Please ensure you make the receptionist aware that
you need a first antenatal appointment with the Doctor.
The midwife will then make arrangements for your antenatal care. This is
usually shared between the midwife, the GP and in some cases, a
consultant obstetrician.
PRACTICE NURSES
We have a team of practice nurses and practice nurse assistants. They
have all undertaken further training enabling them to work within the
practice and continue to update their knowledge on an annual basis.
You may book an appointment with the nurses for such services as
immunisations, foreign travel clinics, cervical smears, blood pressure
checks, asthma checks, advice on a healthier lifestyle, diet, exercise,
cholesterol, ‘quit’ smoking, contraception, dressing wounds, ear
syringing, audiograms, removal of sutures and blood tests.
The practice nurses can also be consulted regarding minor ailments, for
example:
- Urinary Tract Infections
- Conjunctivitis
- Sore Throats
- Ear Infections
